Herbal supplements are healing products made from plant-derived substances such as roots, oil, flowers, leaves, etc. These are available in many forms like ointments, tablets, oils which can be used internally or externally. Herbal supplements are popularly used in the United States. About more than half a country takes them regularly.

Following are some effective Herbal supplements & their uses – 

  1. Arnica

Used externally as a pain relief but if taken internally, can raise blood pressure. Usually applied over bruises & contusions.

2.Beta Carotene

It is an antioxidant used to fight free radicals. It should preferably be taken with other vitamins otherwise, its consequences can be as fatal as death.

3.Black Cohosh

It is widely used by women suffering from PMS. It is also used to treat menopausal symptoms like hot flushes, vaginal dryness, hot sweat, etc.

4.Chamomile

Many people are fond of drinking chamomile tea every morning. It is known to improve bowel movements, sleeplessness & anxiety.

5.Cinnamon

It is known to treat diabetes, But taking it as a supplement has more side effects than benefits, most commonly, gastrointestinal troubles & allergic reactions.

6.Echinacea

It is high in antioxidants and provides immunity to the body. It is also known to reduce blood sugar levels & anxiety. It can also cause probable side effects like nausea & shortness of breath to people who are allergic to flowers.

7.Flaxseed

It is known to lower cholesterol, treat chronic constipation & obesity. Its effects on the swelling of kidneys in people with lupus are also known. Higher doses of it are likely to get more side effects like nausea, stomach ache, etc.

8.Ginger

People take this to relieve nausea & sometimes to treat arthritis as well. But ginger may cause problems with blood clotting & blood pressure.

9.Ginkgo

It treats tinnitus & memory problems. It is also known to improve sexual performance after long-term use of antidepressants. It should be avoided by people taking blood thinners.

10.Peppermint oil

By applying it externally, heals the headache & treats cracked nipples after nursing. Its side effects include heartburn & might interfere with other medications.

11.Soy

It is known to treat high cholesterol levels, memory troubles & menopausal symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats, etc. The most common side effects are stomach upset (diarrhea & constipation).

12.Tea Tree Oil

Externally it is used to treat dandruff, acne, wounds, nail fungus, yeast infections, etc. When it comes to safety & side effects- Tea Tree Oil should not be swallowed as it can cause serious problems such as ataxia, breathing troubles & even coma.

Conclusion

Herbal supplements may seem harmless to take as we see them regularly being used in our day-to-day life, it may not be safe if you are unaware of your medications or medical conditions. These are great for health but overdosing on them or taking them blindly can be fatal.
